A little over one week after formally partnering with the estate of songwriter P.F. Sloan, Primary Wave has inked an administration and marketing deal with the estate of Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Isaac Hayes.

Primary Wave emailed Digital Music News this morning about the tie-up, which marks the latest in a series of noteworthy investments and deals closed by the New York City-based company during 2023. Under the partnership, Primary Wave will “administer various publishing interests” of the Tennessee-born singer-songwriter’s estate.

Additionally, the union will see Brookfield-backed Primary Wave market the name, image, and likeness of the longtime South Park voice actor Hayes, who released at least 20 studio albums as a solo act (1969’s Hot Buttered Soul chief among them) and penned well-known works including “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Coming” during his decades-long career.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Hayes, who passed away in 2008, also created the scores for films such as Shaft (the corresponding theme has about 80 million total Spotify streams) and Truck Turner. A portion of the latter’s music later made its way into Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill movies.

Addressing the newly finalized Primary Wave agreement, Isaac Hayes III indicated that he and his family members “are enthusiastically optimistic” for the future.

“This venture isn’t just a business endeavor, it’s a fusion of passion and legacy,” the Fanbase founder Isaac Hayes III proceeded. “It’s an honor to align with a powerhouse that reverberates with innovation, authenticity, and remarkable foresight. Together, we’re not just creating notes, but orchestrating the future of a timeless, Black American icon, ensuring that the soul, influence, and genius of Isaac Hayes is forever celebrated and revered.”

In comments of his own, longtime Primary Wave COO Ramon Villa relayed in part: “We thank the Hayes family for entrusting us as a partner to continue the great work they have done to uplift the legacy and artistry of Isaac Hayes. He has always been and will always be the epitome of ‘cool’ and truly his music just makes one feel good.”

Last month, BMG finalized new publishing deals with Jennifer Lopez (part of a broader union extending also to recordings) and multiple Sex Pistols members. And earlier this week, Seeker Music purchased “Before You Go” songwriter Phil Plested’s publishing catalog, while Raye renewed her Warner Chappell publishing deal.
